Volume 6 (1994): Becoming Authentic The need to be true to our inmost self is a pressing issue for the gifted. It can also be anxiety-producing. Frank Gruba-McCallister and Caryn Levington present authenticity not as a black-or-white accomplishment but as an ongoing process. William Hague shows how Dabrowski’s theory specifically aids this process, while Carol Morgaine probes the ways power thwarts or augments progress toward authenticity and how dialogue aids advancement. The very nature of authenticity means that it is seldom environmentally supported; appearance—so powerfully applied by advertising—blurs appearance and reality, as Rebecca Erickson explains. Laurence Nixon examines the authentic experience of religious mystics. A newly translated interview with Dabrowski shows his championship of authentic sensitivity in those who may not cope well with their environment. Finally, Stephanie Tolan asks a fascinating question: does a good night’s sleep depend on a full dose of mental stimulation during the day?
