Counseling for Adults

Specific issues arise with gifted adults. Many have been discussed in Advanced Development, our journal on giftedness in adults (the only one we know of that addresses giftedness as personality development, not just achievement). We urge readers to become familiar with each of the volumes of Advanced Development and their contents. Often just gaining a new perspective on a distressing problem can provide a means to deal with it. Reading about the concerns and experiences of other gifted adults can be reassuring: there are others are like me, others share my intensity, emotional heights and depths, sensitivity, and too-acute perception. I am not alone.

In addition to the journals, we offer educational phone counseling to gifted adults and psychotherapeutic counseling in person for those in the Denver area. Some concerns specific to gifted adults that are covered are:

  • The “Too-Problem:” Too excitable, too intense, too conscientious, etc.
  • Heightened empathy in a callous world.
  • Hyperawareness.
  • Multipotentiality. Too many gifts. Making choices.
  • Expectations. Living up to our own and others’ ideals.
  • Career problems.
  • ADHD and giftedness.
  • False feedback. Negative input from others who misunderstand.
  • Fitting in. Dealing with flawed environments.
  • Loneliness. Where is my group? Where are others like me?
  • Authenticity and self-actualization. Who am I? Where am I going?

Betty Maxwell, M.A., a psychotherapist with years of experience working with gifted adults and their concerns, is available to those seeking guidance. She charges $120/hour for her services.
