Testing in Difficult Economic Times

If your gifted child is suffering in school, you may have considered assessment to benefit your advocacy efforts, but have second thoughts due to the economy. The staff of the Gifted Development Center is committed to making this process as easy and economical as possible. For families coming from out of state, in most cases we can ...schedule testing and a post-test conference within a two-day window, so you need not come to Denver for an extended stay. If only one parent can accompany a child, we can provide a post-test conference on speaker phone to include a parent who must be elsewhere. We have always offered competitive prices, while providing the highest quality assessment for gifted children. You will receive a formal report you can use multiple times throughout your child’s educational career.

Like you, we are advocates for gifted students, and our reports form a basis for advocacy for your child at school. Most schools identify gifted children using brief intelligence screeners designed to determine only whether a child should be admitted to a gifted program or not. These screeners miss some gifted children, and provide little information about educational needs for those who score in the gifted range. When your child is frustrated in his or her educational progress, you may request accommodations, but have little basis for your requests in the eyes of educators. You are just a parent. We’ve been there, too!

Comprehensive intelligence and achievement testing give you specific information about your child’s strengths, relative weaknesses, learning style, and academic progress, clarifying your child’s educational needs at school. We interpret all of this information to make recommendations to support your child’s giftedness in school (and accommodate any relative weaknesses, secondarily, as gently as possible). Assessment thus becomes your ally and a basis for your advocacy. No longer are you asking for something you think might help your child. You are requesting what professionals recommend for your child.

For more information on assessment to aid advocacy, see Academic Advocacy for Gifted Children: A Parent’s Complete Guide (especially Ch. 3) by Barbara Jackson Gilman. Gifted children who remain underchallenged year after year are at risk. Not having to stretch or face challenging problems, they fail to learn good work habits and organizational skills, experience melt-downs when they cannot solve a difficult problem instantly, and may lose their motivation to learn. Assessment can document their special needs and the critical importance of effective options. We can help you identify those and consult with you, as needed, as your child progresses through school. We welcome you to the Gifted Development Center’s services and are ready to help.
