Vehicle-Communication Affiliates Program Launching - Industry Support Sought

CARS has been working intensively over the past months to help launch a new research initiative on "Mobile Networks for Vehicular Safety and Efficiency" at Stanford University. This research will explore the applications of 4G/LTE mobile cellular networks to complement Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) and Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) systems with the goal to improve driving safety and efficiency. It is planned to fund this work initially via a Vehicle-Communication Affiliates Program (V-CAP), for which support from industry partners is being sought

The Stanford University leadership group for V-CAP will be Professors Arogyaswami Paulraj and Fouad Tobagi and Dr. Sven Beiker. This will be an academia and industry partnership and anticipating active industry participation and leadership. It is planned to run this program initially for two years to establish the feasibility of this research direction. At a later point the future of the program will be jointly discussed including seeking federal funding. The research team will initially include one full time Post-Doctoral researcher with the possibility of adding other students or staff later. The researchers will be affiliated with Electrical Engineering / Computer Science Departments at Stanford University. Dr. Sven Beiker, Executive Director of the Center for Automotive Research at Stanford (CARS), will support the program administratively by facilitating the exchange between industry affiliates and faculty / research staff.

The initial funding goal is to have at least 4 industry affiliates, each pledging $50,000 per year and preferably making a two year commitment. Through their affiliation, companies will benefit from facilitated access to publications that will originate from V-CAP, access to the anticipated vehicle communication research infrastructure, and invitations to affiliates meetings that will further the exchange between academia and industry experts in the field.

The initiators of V-CAP invite industry partners to join as a founding member of the program to help launch this exciting effort to improve vehicular safety and efficiency.
