AHPCRC Goes to Supercomputing 2010,

27th Army Science Conference

AHPCRC sponsored a prominent exhibit at Supercomputing 2010 (New Orleans, LA), where nine AHPCRC-sponsored grad students and postdocs and one senior computational scientist demonstrated new capabilities for hardware accelerators and handheld devices, powerful algorithms for modeling and simulation applications, and new methods for extracting information from very large databases.

Three of the demonstrations made an encore performance at the 27th Army Science Conference (Orlando, FL): an iPad app for performing reduced-order model calculations, Image Webs software for tagging and correlating images in very large databases, and a real-time finite element analysis application that runs on a graphics processing unit (GPU).

Representing AHPCRC at these conferences were:

Soumik Banerjee and Tomasz Tuzel (NMSU, mentor: Jeanine Cook, SC10)
Cris Cecka (Stanford, mentor: Eric Darve, SC10 and ASC)
Mark Potts (HPTi, collaborating with Charbel Farhat, Stanford, SC10 and ASC)
Omprakash Gnawali and Zixuan Wang (Stanford, mentor: Leonidas Guibas, SC10 and ASC)
Yipkei Kwok and Ricardo Portillo (UTEP, mentor: Patricia Teller, SC10)
Miguel Hernandez IV and Reinaldo Sanchez Arias (UTEP, mentor: Leticia Velazquez, SC10)

AHPCRC Summer Institute Completes

Second Annual Program

The AHPCRC Summer Institute marked the completion of its second successful season at Stanford University, with 14 undergraduate students working on nine projects. The students presented their research on August 13, 2010. After a welcome by AHPCRC Center Director Charbel Farhat and introductory remarks by Army Research Laboratory Director John Miller, each student gave a 15-minute presentation on his or her research to an audience of ARL representatives, Summer Institute mentors, and their fellow students. AHPCRC ARL Cooperative Agreement Manager Raju Namburu; ARL Minority Outreach Program Manager Vallen Emery, Jr.; and John Miller offered closing remarks and presented awards.

AHPCRC Supports NMSU PREP Summer Program

New Mexico State University’s Pre-Freshman Engineering Program (PREP) celebrated its 14th year in the summer of 2010, with a record 176 students completing the program. AHPCRC is a key funding agency for PREP, and through AHPCRC’s commitment to excellence and generous financial support, PREP has continued to grow. (read more...)

AHPCRC 2010 Summer Institute Applications Due March 26

2010 Summer Institute for Undergraduates in Computational Science and Engineering
June 21 - August 12, 2010
Army High Performance Computing Research Center
Stanford University, Stanford, CA

The objectives of the Institute are to provide training and hands on experience in the use of computational techniques for science and engineering students, and to prepare those who choose to pursue graduate studies in technology areas dependent upon computational science and engineering.
The program curriculum combines short courses in computational engineering methods concentrating on structural mechanics, fluid dynamics, and computer programming for parallel clusters, with a research experience working with one of the AHPCRC research groups at Stanford University.
Participants receive a stipend of $4,000 for the eight-week period. Participants receive a travel allowance and dormitory accommodations, including meals, at Stanford University. Students local to Stanford may opt for a higher stipend in exchange for the travel, room and board.
Prerequisites: This program is intended for undergraduate students who anticipate graduation Spring 2011 or later. It is expected that all students in the Summer Institute will have completed freshman calculus and will have some computer programming experience.
Applications should include the following information:
• An application form (Word format, click on link at right).
• A one page statement including career and research objectives and computer experience.
• A current transcript of coursework.
• Two letters of recommendation (recommendations from AHPCRC researchers are given preference, but not required).
This information should be directed to the following address by March 26, 2010 (late applications cannot be assured of full consideration):
